Getting kids to eat their fruits and vegetables can indeed be a daunting task for many moms. Hopefully it's just a short phase that they will soon outgrow, but sometimes this "phase" seems to last forever and we really do want our kids to get into their bodies all colors of the rainbow (not just brown found in french fries or red found in ketchup!).
It is so important for them during their growing years to get all these great vitamins and nutrients. It can seem hard to make them understand the importance of eating healthy, but there are a number of methods you can use to show them just how important it really is.
Here are 6 ways you can teach your kids about eating healthy and help them to eat their colors:
#1 Get them involved in food preparation. Get your kids to help you in the kitchen. They can help with preparing veggies for supper or cutting up fruits and vegetables for snacks. You can get them their own special kid-safe knife, which can make them feel important!
#2 It's all about presentation. Get creative and make snack time fun by taking different fruits and vegetables and arranging them in fun ways. Use small cookie cutters to cut them into fun shapes and put them on sticks, or use raisins and seeds to put "faces" on sliced fruits and vegetables.
#3 Have the kids grow their own garden (indoor or out!). By having the kids involved at the beginning of the growing process will get them excited come harvest time. To know that they grew those delicious foods themselves will surely get them to try them out.
#4 Make a juice or smoothie. Smoothies and juices are delicious and fun ways to get those fruits and veggies into your kids. You can even sneak in some spinach and they won't even taste it! Try blending together a handful of baby spinach, 1/2 cup blueberries, 1/4 cup milk (coconut milk is our personal favorite), 1/4 cup pineapple or apple juice and a sprinkle of cinnamon. The combinations are endless!
#5 Hide the fruits and veggies. Find ways to hide fruits and vegetables in dishes they love. A cookbook that I have yet to discover myself, but that has been recommended for picky eaters is Deceptively Delicious by Jessica Seinfeld.
#6 A little reversed psychology might just do the trick. When you are enjoying some healthy food yourself, make sure to let them know what they are missing out on. They may just get curious enough to try it out! Remember, kids learn best by imitating what you do, so if you eat the right foods, they will eventually follow suit!
