Isotretinoin for a long time has been used to successfully treat cystic acne. However, the relationship between their effectiveness and their impact psychosocial patient has yet fully described. Cystic acne affects people of different age groups and can lead to low self-esteem, shyness and social awkwardness.

Scientists from the Department of Dermatology Alca?iz Hospital in Spain have carried out a study on 346 patients with moderate acne. The subjects were treated with oral isotretinoin and after 30 weeks, the effects of treatment on the level of anxiety, depression and quality of life were determined.

"This study has focused on evaluating the effectiveness of oral isotretinoin treatment and its impact on general health, quality of life and psychological functioning of patients with acne," according to the lead author.

Acne can be caused by a number of factors, and although it is common in adolescents, does not discriminate in terms of age. Acne does not only produce physical imperfections but also emotional scars. Health professionals tend to dismiss this as part of the treatment of cystic acne.

Oral isotretinoin is the treatment of choice when the patient acne does not respond to oral antibiotics and other common treatment methods. Found that isotretinoin may reduce the production of sebum of up to 90%.

In the cited study, the authors led by Servando E. Marron discovered that effective treatment of acne led to reduced anxiety levels, improve the quality of life and decrease of clinical symptoms. Found significant statistical differences in the quality of life of subjects, anxiety, patient satisfaction and levels of depression pre and post-treatment.

The authors suggest that do more studies to clarify the relationship between treatment of isotretinoin and its impact on the individual psycho-social. They add that acne patients should be tested for suicide and depression before treatment trends.

This study only goes to show that the right acne treatment can help patients to overcome shyness and social withdrawal experienced with severe acne. Teenagers are more prone to these themes because of the pressure and the need for social membership. Suicidal tendencies and depression are higher in this age group and health professionals must now take into consideration the psychological state of patients who suffer from acne.

Although there is a warning from scientists - that isotretinoin should be handled appropriately and treatment must be administered in correct doses because it is teratogenic, which means that they may interfere with the development of a fetus.
