Sinus infections, which are known to affect millions of people worldwide, are one of the most common medical conditions afflicting people in the world. Though occurring widely, most people are not aware that they suffer from it because the sinus infection usually passes away without leaving much of an impact on the immune system. However, some people have a tendency to get this disease on a regular basis due to some factor. Those factors are the following -
* Genetic factors play a decisive role in deciding how often one may suffer from allergic reaction which are a major cause of sinusitis attacks.
* The shape of the nose also has an effect on the frequency of infection. People having a deviated septum and nasal polyps will suffer from chronic sinus infections.
* Sometimes external forces such as an accident can make the shape of the nose change which can lead to infections.
Causes of Sinus Infections
One of the most common causes of sinusitis is a bout of the viral influenza, or the common cold. The cause for sinusitis is because the blockage of the nasal passage prevents passage o air into the sinuses. As the sinuses become dry, it provides optimum conditions for the growth of bacteria which multiply rapidly to cause the sinus infection. This also leads to inflammation of the nasal lining, which further leads to excessive production of mucus. This excess mucus accumulates in the nasal passage and causes improper drainage. The cold abates in around a week's time but the inflammation of the sinuses continues for a much longer time.
As there are many similar symptoms between a cold, bacterial infection and sinus infections, it becomes necessary to know the difference between the symptoms so proper diagnosis can result in a proper treatment. The commonly seen symptoms of sinus infections are -
* A dull throbbing headache, especially in the morning accompanies by puffy, watery eyes
* A steady pain around the eyes and in the facial area where the sinuses are located
* A sore and raspy feeling in the throat
* Toothaches in the molar regions
* Nasal congestion
* Generation of a foul smell, yellowish/greenish discharge from the nose
* Sensitivity to bright lights
* A persistent cough could also be a symptom to sinus infection caused by a bacterial infection
These symptoms are commonly seen in people who are suffering from chronic cases of sinusitis. For relief from these symptoms a number of sinus home remedies are available which are extremely effective. With constant care this condition can be prevented from becoming a serious problem.
